Using a Performance Resume Template

Using a Performance Resume TemplateA performance resume template is an excellent tool to help you highlight the best qualities in a particular career area. It can even help you get your job in that particular field, but how do you know which one to choose?Templates are usually not created for every single job opening. If you were thinking that they would, then you should stop right now because you're wrong. Just about everyone who applies for a job has already been interviewed. The hiring manager may have asked the person who applied for the job what they liked about the interview and what they could improve on. You can either just make a list of what you like about the interview or you can come up with a good-sounding list of your strengths. In either case, it helps to be able to summarize your interview performance in a few sentences. The performance resume template should help you come up with a long list of bullet points about your professional accomplishments. Be sure to keep them brief but to the point so that they appear professionally written. I always use bullet points to explain why I think a person is qualified for the job.Using a performance resume template allows you to customize each individual bullet point. This makes it easy to highlight the most important attributes about you, such as your past skills, your expertise, and any other additional skills that you have learned since you started your career. If you are really good at a certain job, you can write about what it was that made you better than the other applicants. It is a good idea to make a chart and label all of your skills on it. When you want to apply for a new job, you can look at your chart and see how many skills you have and then look at all of your strengths in relation to your weaknesses. Once you find a job that you can truly excel at, it will help you land that job.To learn more about using a performance resume template, you should check out my article on the subject. Or you can just go online and start your own list.

TipDo you want to be 100% confident in your application? ur recently updated and free resume builder will create the perfect resume in just a few minutes.Resume Formatting TipsThere are several key resume formats out there for job seekers. However, there are certain formatting conventions to follow across all industries and resume styles. The following resume building tips will help you lay a strong foundation for your application.8. Keep Your Resume to One or Two PagesWhile some people find it difficult to find enough positive things about themselves to fill one page, others have the opposite problem. For entry- and mid-level professionals, one page is the most common resume length. Two pages is fine if you have extensive experience or skills and really cant cut things down further.Three or four pages is almost exclusively for senior executives or academics with publications.9. Order Resume Sections by StrengthIf you have plenty of professional experience and its your best selling point, place that above your education. On the other hand, if youre a recent graduate with only an int ernship under you belt, put your education at the top.Using a resume template with two columns can help you arrange your skills and education sections to best catch the hiring managers eye.10. Use the Reverse Chronological FormatMost HR departments favor the reverse chronological resume format, which lists your experience from most recent to oldest.Simply put, your newest work experience is (likely) the most relevant, and will leave the greatest impression on the hiring manager. In exceptional cases, however, the functional resume format is best for writing a skills-based resume. Many people use a single version of their resume and submit it everywhere. This isnt ideal, because job roles are often too varied for one resume to work for them all. TipHiring managers can reportedly judge a resumes worth with just a quick glance. Try our 6 second resume challenge to see if you agree.11. Dont Rely Too Heavily On Resume ExamplesA simple Google search of resume sample will return tens of tho usands of results, and some are actually quite professional resume examples. Others, notlage so much. While these can be a great resource for gathering inspiration, writinga resume that captivates hiring managers requires more than simply copying and pasting the information of other applicants.12. Never Use a One Size Fits All ResumeThis is one of the 10 commandments of resume writing and among the most invaluable pieces of resume advice that career advisors give. Many people use a single version of their resume and submit it it everywhere. This isnt ideal, because job roles are often too varied for one resume to work for them all./rg_blockquoteYou can increase your chances of landing an interview by building a customized resume tailored to your target role.Dont worry, this doesnt mean starting from scratch every time. Instead, all you need to do is slightly tweak yourintroduction, experience section, andadditional skillsto match the job description, as well as the specific position yo ure applying for.13. Choose a vorlage That Reflects Your IndustryIf youre applying for a creative job, consider using a more creative resume template or make your own using your marketable skills. Be cautious about adding too much flair though your resume is still a professional document, and too many fancy touches can make it tacky and difficult to read.Slightly more basic resume templates are still preferred in many executive roles, so dont be afraid of going the classic route if you work in law, finance, or an upper management position. Tipbedrngnis sure which are the best managerial skills to include on your resume? ur detailed guide to management skills has everything you need.14. Use Appropriate FontsEven the most qualified resume will fail to land an interview if the resume font is unprofessional or too small to read.If in doubtSize 12 font is standardUse Calibri or GaramondNever, ever use Comic SansRead this article on resume margins to make the most attractive resume poss ible. TipFont choice is a huge part of resume design. Make sure your font is not only professional, but visually consistent with the rest of your resumes appearance as well.15. Go Easy on the CAPSTHIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL THE RESUME TIPS.You probably had the same reaction to that sentence as a hiring manager would.Used sparingly in headings, typing things out in full capital letters can add emphasis. Used poorly, and it can look like youre arguing with someone on an internet forum.16. Changing Industries? Switch the FormatIf youre changing careers at any stage in your life, its wise to use a combination resume format. This structure allows you to focus on the transferable skills you bring to the new role, rather than irrelevant work experience.Switching the format is also wise if youve jumped between companies frequently and is therefore one of the most useful resume tips for job hoppers.17. A Resume is elend a CVCV stands for studienordnung vitae, which means course of lif e in Latin. It is typically the preferred application document in English-speaking Europe and the academic world.CVs are more in-depth documents made of multiple pages and written in a more general voice. Resumes are shorter, more concise documents, and are usually limited to one page. TipGet the lowdown on the difference between a CV vs resume to make sure you go with the right one.18. Dont Include a PhotoYou wont find any resume picture tips on this list for one reason hiring managers will instantly trash a resume that includes a photounless youre applying to be a model or an actor.Professional resume templates rarely include space for a picture because it indicates a failure to understand formal employment processes. TipWant some additional compelling reasons why you shouldnt include a resume photo? Check out our post for the lowdown on including resume pictures.19. Save Your Resume as a portable document formatWhile most people just attach their resume to their emails in a .d oc format, its worth attaching it as a PDF file as well. PDFs retain their formatting regardless of how they are viewed, so theyre your best bet when sending your application out electronically. In terms of IT resume tips, this is a handy one to file away and use regularly.Resume Content TipsStrong formatting and using the perfect resume template can make a great first impression, but its the content that will keep the hiring manager reading. These resume writing tips will reinforce the core of your application and make you a more viable candidate.20. Power Up With Action VerbsAction verbs enhance your resume bullet points because they sell your abilities and help you avoid sounding like a robot. For exampleFollowed customer service protocolvs.Enforced all formal customer service protocolur ultimate list of action verbs is a good starting point if youd like to reboot your resume with powerful vocabulary. Theres a reason this is one of our favorite resume tips it works wonders.21. Avo id the Overused Resume ObjectiveIf you have a few years of professional experience, consider using a summary of qualifications to showcase your expertise rather than a typical career objective.Qualifications summaries allow you to place all of your achievements and strengths right at the top of the page where the hiring manager will see them immediately.A resume objective is often more suitable for new graduates, or those targeting a specific position.Or if youd like some other options, you cant go wrong with a concise resume profile or an emphatic professional summary. Career objectives should be used primarily if you have minimal (or no) work experience mix things up if you can.22. Quantify Your AchievementsOne of the best resume tips we titelseite across our entire website is to use quantification.Saying you increased revenue or raised efficiency at a former company is meaningless on its own. Instead, make your accomplishments jump off the page by using numbers, percentages, tim e frames, and dollars to measure your big wins.23. Dont List Unnecessary InformationMany tips for a good resume suggest including your hobbies to add a personal touch. When doing this, focus on ones that are applicable to the position. For example, if youre applying to work in a recording studio, say that you play guitar. However, mentioning your musical prowess probably wont help you work in a law firm.We have a comprehensive guide for how to add extra curricular activities in a resume and paint a complete picture of yourself for the hiring manager if youre curious how this is done.Listing the titles acquired as you advanced in a company is how to correctly show a promotion on your resume. It illustrates your career progression and how you succeeded with a growing number of responsibilities.24. Dont Travel Too Far Back in TimeHiring managers want to know your recent career trajectory, and see how youve developed as a professional. Thats why the reverse chronological format is so sta ndard today.A general rule of thumb is to only include work experience as far back as 15 years. Anything that occurred before that isnt useful anymore, unless it included a notable achievement or is incredibly relevant to the positionKeep your resume updated and current. Nobody cares that you graduated from high school in 1972, they care about what youve been doing recently as a professional.25. Conquer Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)Many large corporations now use ATS software to sort through the thousands of applications they receive on a regular basis. These systems search for keywords and key phrases relevant to the position theyre hiring for and filter out applicants who did not use the correct vocabulary. If you need some proven ways to build an ATS friendly resume, we have a variety of tactics most candidates arent familiar with.26. Show Internal PromotionsSome people believe they only are supposed to list the highest position they achieved at each company they worked for. Th is isnt necessarily true.Listing the titles acquired as you advanced in a company is how to correctly show a promotion on your resume. It illustrates your career progression and how you succeeded with a growing number of responsibilities.Other candidates are using resume tips and tricks like this, so you should too.27. Downplay Gaps in Your Work HistoryGaps in your work history send the wrong signals to employers. Its in your best interest to de-emphasize these gaps, and explain them in person after landing the interview. You can also hash out your reasons further in your cover letter, but one effective way to disguise work experience gaps is to use a functional resume format. Such a format can help turn your non-traditional work history into a strength, rather than a weakness. TipNot sure how to manage your employment gaps? Our free resume builder will organize your career highlights in a matter of minutes.Resume Advice Language Grammar TipsThe devil is in the details. Instead of falling foul to grammar errors and typos, demonstrate your attention to detail by avoiding the most common language and grammatical mistakes made by job seekers.28. Dont Use Too Many Personal PronounsYou generally want to use as few personal pronouns (I, Me, Myself etc) as possible when describing your work experience. A resume is already a personal professional document, so including personal pronouns is redundant. If you can eliminate them altogether, youll look like a true pro. TipWriting a cover letter that wins over hiring managers is a different ballgame. Dont be afraid to use personal pronouns here, just dont overdo it.29. Write Numbers CorrectlyOur editors agree numbers from 1 to 9 should be spelled out (one, two, three, etc). Numbers 10+ should be written numerically (11, 12, 13, etc.).30. Be Consistent With PeriodsIts up to you whether you finish each experience bullet with a period, but its important to be consistent with your resume margins and formatting.31. Proofread. And Then Proofread Again.Even the most confident writer is not immune to typos. Once youve finished writing, double-check, and then triple-check your resume for small errors.Ideally, ask a friend to proofread it too in order to provide a second set of eyes. Or your mom, thats cool too.33. Spell Your Name CorrectlyWere 100% serious misspelled names are actually one of the top five mistakes hiring managers see. Should You Reapply for a Job Thats Been Reposted What You Need to Know

Should You Reapply for a Job Thats Been Reposted What You Need to Know Ask Amanda Should I Reapply for a Job That Got Reposted? Each week, TopResumes career advice expert, Amanda Augustine, answers user questions like the one below fromQuoraand ourAsk Amandaform. A certified professional career coach (CPCC) and resume writer (CPRW), Amanda has been helping professionals improve their careers for nearly 15 years. Have a question for Amanda?Submit it here.Q Should you reapply for a job that got reposted?Should I reapply for a lokalitt if it has been alfruchtwein 30 days since I submitted my application and I noticed the company just renewed their posting on its careers site and other job boards? Robby M.Great question, Robby Before you decide whether or not to reapply for a position thats been reposted, its important to understand why a job gets reposted at all. Why jobs get repostedHere are some of the most common reasons why an employer may decide to post a position a second time. The applicant pool was weak. The hiring manager did not receive enough applications from qualified candidates during the initial posting. This is, by far, the most common reason why a job gets reposted. Unfortunately, many qualified candidates are often eliminated from the applicant pool early on because their resumes were not compatible with the employers applicant tracking system (ATS) or because their applications contained one of the top resume mistakes recruiters consider to be a deal-breaker.The job requirements changed. Once a hiring manager depspeciesures reviewing applications or interviewing candidates, he or she may realize that the job posting needs to be changed to more accurately reflect the opportunity, its requirements, and what will be expected of the right candidate. For instance, those involved in filling the position may determine that the years of experience need to be adjusted or that a requirement for the role needs to be added, removed, or further explained.A jo b offer fell through. It happens. Sometimes an employer finds the right candidate, extends a job offer, and the offer is declined by the job seeker. Other times, a prospective employee initially accepts the offer but then changes his or her mind at the last minute. If the hiring manager doesnt have a strong runner-up to fall back on, the job may be reposted and the search for the right candidate will start anew. When should you move on?There are a few instances when its not worth your time to reapply for a positionYou were eliminated during the interview process. If you previously interviewed for the role, were rejected, and the job requirements have not changed since the position was reposted, theres no point in applying again. Youre simply wasting everyones time. I know its frustrating when youre excited about a job and think youre a good fit, but theres not much you can do after youve met with the gruppe and sent your interview thank-you notes. Youre better off focusing on new opp ortunities than dwelling on the one that got away. The new posting says that previous applicants will be considered. If the new posting explicitly states prior applicants are still in the running, there is no need to reapply. As far as you know, your candidacy is still in contention for the job. Applying to the reposted position is a waste.Your resume hasnt changed. Sure, some job applications fall through the cracks. Hiring managers especially those not using ATS software get inundated with job applications and may not look at every resume that crossed their inbox. However, if the job has been reposted, its pretty tresor to assume the hiring manager has reviewed the existing pool of applicants and is looking for new ones. If you havent edited your resume, its foolish to apply a second time and expect a different outcome. You dont meet the job requirements. Theres no point in applying for a job if you dont possess the right qualifications. Review the job listing again to identify wh ich requirements are considered must-haves. If you dont meet these core requirements, you shouldnt have bothered applying for the job in the first place and certainly shouldnt apply a second time. When should you reapply to a job thats been reposted? While there are a few instances when its not in your best interest to reapply for a job thats been reposted, there are many cases when it does make senseYour resume has been professionally rewritten. If you used a professional resume-writing service to makeover your resume, apply for the position a second time.
